What is authorship?
COPE: Has clear policies (that allow for transparency around who contributed to the work and in what capacity) should be in place for requirements for authorship and contributorship as well as processes for managing potential disputes — check the site for details.
Predatory Publishing
COPE has a Predatory publishing, discussion document about this issue that you can download. It is very important for authors to become aware of. It introduces issues, and analyses potential solutions, around predatory publications. COPE welcomes comments which add to this ongoing debate. They note:
Common features of the phenomenon include deception and lack of quality controls, and there are a range of warning signs to look for when assessing a journal. Problems for authors, readers, and other stakeholders are also discussed, as well as an examination of established interventions and solutions to address the problem. COPE presents 30 insightful suggestions to tackle, avoid, and raise awareness of the problem of predatory journals.
Key points
- Many warning signs of predatory journals are the opposite of the Principles of transparency and best practice in scholarly publishing.
- Negative effects of predatory publishing include deceiving authors into paying for non-existent services, wasting funding, and diluting the research with unreliable papers.
- Solutions to the problem of fake journals may include community education or criminal charges.
- Guidance, training, and safe lists should be updated regularly as new journals frequently emerge.
- Predatory publishers often use the author publication charge business model.

Collective Writing – Introduction
Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA) members began experimenting with forms of collective writing a few years ago when Michael Peters developed the concept of short 500 word pieces in a specific architecture, on a topic. The authors are no longer just from PESA and although many articles have appeared in Educational Philosophy and Theory (EPAT), they have also been published in other journals.
Now a collection of these form the new book edited by Michael A. Peters, Tina Besley, Marek Tesar, Liz Jackson, Petar Jandric, Sonja Arndt and Sean Sturm, published by Taylor & Francis – Table of Contents below.
